CLEON C. MASON, MD

– from Child-Pestering Parents (1930) –

It took less than a generation to stir up a backlash against the doctrine of psychoanalysis put forward by Freud, who imagined children’s development as a series of psychosexual conflicts and neuroses such as ‘mother fixation’. Equally in the sights of critics were behaviourists like the Watsons, who believed children, like any animal young, could be trained to do anything. But there was another group of child specialists increasingly telling parents what to do: companies selling products in the age of advertising.

A piece published in the North American Review argued that this cacophony of so-called experts was ‘making little hypochondriacs of our youngsters’.
